Mother’s Day Gifts with Meaning

Given all she does, how can you ever manage to buy the perfect gift for mom?  Luckily, there’s a certain universal truth to what mom’s want on Mother’s Day – a little family time with a double dose of thoughtfulness.  With these ideas you’ll be giving a gift with almost as much heart as she offers up without missing a beat.

Give a gift of momoirs.

Imagine giving a mom the gift of capturing her own stories of motherhood with the fines of a seasoned author. The Momoir Project takes baby books to a completely new level with memoir writing and blog writing classes for moms. The workshops and retreats are like a two-in-one gift, giving Mom a chance for some much welcomed self-reflection time, as well as the chance to tap into a little creativity.  Here moms get a chance to record the amusing, seemingly mundane day-to-day activities that are given new life through the art of storytelling.

Not just any old day.

If you’re shopping for a mom that’s more about bling than books, e-store Not Just Any Old Day offers a ton of unique ways for mom to keep her kids close to her heart. Imagine a Tiffany inspired key necklace that features the calendar birthday of a child with designs in silver, antique brass, gold – all marked with a Swarovski available in a number of different birthstone settings.  And for moms with an edge, the John Hardy style ring in gun-metal will rock her day.

Reach out to a single mom.

Cause We Care, a Vancouver-based charitable foundation created by women for single mothers and their children in need, is offering up gift baskets to moms facing the every day challenges of poverty.  In lieu of the usual perfume and candles, donating $65 will allow for one Care Package to be provided to a mother in need. This year, Cause We Care aims to bring much needed supplies to over 400 single mothers at over 13 facilities in the Vancouver community.

Support kids with Mother’s Day brunch.

If your mom enjoys the tastier side of life, choose one of the Vancouver restaurants participating in the B.C. Children’s Hospital Mother’s Day Campaign, where a portion of the proceeds go towards the B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation.  At the top of the list of participating restaurants is Hawskworth, where Mom will enjoy culinary delights fit for a queen.  Visit any of the restaurants listed on the B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation website, on May 12 and 13 and they will kindly donate a portion of their sales.

Make Mother’s Day a bust.

When Moms buy their daughter their first bra it’s an unforgettable milestone.  Why not turn the tables on this special mother-daughter experience by returning the favor? Diane Thomson (Diane’s Lingerie), one of the city’s top fitting specialists, has seen a recent trend where Vancouver women are stepping up and bringing in their mothers to uncover beautiful new lingerie.  And, when more mature moms have seen changes in their body, but haven’t updated their undergarments, the specialty fitting leaves them feeling sexier than ever.
